How to measure the results of a guest post, honestly

A guest post is not a switch that raises rankings overnight. Here is what you can measure, and when.

People often judge a guest post a week after it goes live and are disappointed. Search engines need time to find the page, process the link and decide what to do with it. Nobody can promise a ranking, and we do not.

First check: did it go live correctly?

  1. Open the page and confirm your link is there with the anchor text you agreed.
  2. Inspect the link and note its tag: none, nofollow, sponsored or ugc. See what the tags mean.
  3. Save the address, the date and a screenshot.

What you can measure

  • Referral visits. In your analytics tool, look at visits that arrive from the host site. This often shows the value of a post even when the link tag asks search engines not to count it.
  • Branded searches. More people searching your name after a post is a real sign that readers noticed it.
  • Indexing. Search the exact address of the post. If Google does not list it, the link may not be counted yet.
  • Backlink reports. Tools such as Ahrefs or Moz may show the new link after some weeks. Free versions are limited.
  • Rankings for the target page. Watch the pages you linked to, over months, not days.

How long to wait

There is no fixed time. Give it several weeks before drawing any conclusion, and remember that rankings also move for reasons that have nothing to do with the link: your own content, competitors and changes in search results.

What a good result looks like

A good guest post is read, linked in a way that fits the article, and on a site you are proud of. If you also see some referral visits and a few more branded searches, that is a fair result for one post.

Keep a simple log

For each placement note the site, date, link address, anchor text, link tag and price. After a few months you can see which kinds of sites gave you real visits and which did not, and spend your next budget accordingly. Our guest post checklist is a good place to start.
