Guide
Guest post vs link insertion: which should you buy?
Both can earn a relevant link. They solve different problems. Here is how to choose.
The short answer
Choose a guest post when you want a new article that carries your message to a new audience. Choose a link insertion when you want a link on a page that already exists and already has readers, and you do not need a new article.
What each one is
A guest post is a new article, written for the host site and published there, usually with a link or two back to your website. A link insertion (also called a niche edit) adds your link to an article that is already published, by editing a sentence so the link fits naturally.
| Guest post | Link insertion | |
|---|---|---|
| What is published | A new article | A link inside an existing article |
| Content needed | Yes, written or supplied | Usually none |
| Control over the message | High: you shape the topic | Limited to the sentence around the link |
| Page already has readers | No, it starts new | Often yes |
| Usually quicker to place | Slower: needs writing and review | Often quicker: the page already exists |
When a guest post is the better choice
- You want to be known for a topic and have something worth saying about it.
- You want a page you can point people to, not just a link in someone else's text.
- You are happy to wait for writing and the publisher's review.
When a link insertion is the better choice
- You want a link where readers already are, on a page that already covers your topic.
- You do not have the time or content to produce a new article.
- You want to support one specific page of your site.
Mistakes to avoid
- Chasing the biggest number. A relevant mid-size site usually beats an irrelevant big one. See DA vs DR explained.
- Ignoring the page. For insertions, check the actual article: is it good, is it on topic, is the link placement natural?
- Skipping the checks. Before you pay, run through our site checklist.
